NO LEGAL POT IN 2014
Don’t look for Colorado to be a springboard to legalizing recreational marijuana in Iowa, Gov. Terry Branstad and Iowa legislative leaders agreed Wednesday.
While there could be further discussion of legalizing pot for medical purposes during the 2014 session of the Iowa Legislature that convenes on Monday, it’s very unlikely that marijuana will be legalized in Iowa for either medical or recreational purposes this year, they said.
Iowa Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, predicted there is “zero chance” of state lawmakers authorizing recreational marijuana, while he described any possibility of legalizing medical marijuana as a long shot.
Senate Republican Leader Bill Dix of Shell Rock agreed with Gronstal, saying of recreational marijuana: “I think there is no interest in that whatsoever.” But Dix does expect further conversations about medical marijuana – a subject that received Iowa Senate committee consideration last session.
