A service honoring Kent’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Allen Henderson officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by V.F.W. Post No. 1856 and the United States Air Force Honor Guard. The visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Monday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
Kent is survived by his wife Caroline; his sons, Loren (Diane) Helgevold; and Russ (Shirley) Helgevold, all of Fort Dodge; four grandchildren, Aaron, Tyler, Katelyn and Megan; and his siblings, Lois Osborn, Stratford; Don Helgevold, Goldfield; and Jane Loux, Clarion. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Lucas Helgevold.
W. Kent Helgevold, the son of Harry W. and C. Lorene (Porter) Helgevold, was born October 28, 1932, on a farm near Goldfield. He was reared and educated in the Goldfield area and graduated from Goldfield High School in 1951. Kent served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1960. On March 12, 1957, Kent was united in marriage to Caroline Sue Trautwein in Winfield, Kansas. In 1960, the couple moved to Fort Dodge, when Kent was hired by the Fort Dodge Police Department. Kent retired as assistant police chief of the Fort Dodge Police Department in 1987, following a 26 year career.
Kent was a member of the Iowa State Policeman’s Association and the American Legion, since 1962. He enjoyed playing golf, completing jigsaw puzzles and he was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
