Gene Deitrick, 77, of Evansdale, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.
He was born January 7, 1940 in Waterloo, the son of Vernon and Berdella Smith Deitrick. Gene married Janeen Conway on May 1963; they later divorced. He attended Waterloo West High School. Gene worked at New Hampton Police Department from 1964 to 1966. In 1966, he moved to Waterloo and became a police officer for the Waterloo Police Department, retiring in 1994. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era from 1961‑1964, receiving an honorable discharge.
Gene was a past president and member of Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Lancers Car Club, Police Assoc. and Black Hawk Street Machines. He liked working on classic cars and driving in the 4th Street Cruise.
Gene is survived by his son, Lonnie Deitrick of Evansdale; two daughters, Kristi (Joel) Osborne of Evansdale and Deb (Kelly) Jones of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Deriane Deitrick, Cody Osborne, Ashlea Webber, Rylea Kern, Ryder Kern, Bella Jones and Davian Jones; a brother, Gary Deitrick of Waterloo; a sister, Sandra Slater of Waterloo, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Paulette Deitrick, and a niece, Cheryle Ohrt.
