James A. Berhow
January 31, 1951 - September 9, 2022
James Anthony Berhow, 71, of Spencer, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 9, 2022.
Jim was born in Mason City, Iowa on January 31, 1951 to parents James Oliver Berhow and Mariel (Struck). After graduating from Spencer High School in 1969, Jim served in the United States Navy.
Upon his return from the military, Jim was hired by the City of Spencer in July 1975 where he served as a Police Officer until his retirement in October 2007. During his time as a police officer, he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1997 and served as Interim Police Chief from February 2007 until his retirement.
In his free time, Jim was an avid and extremely talented wildlife photographer. When he wasn’t traveling to places afar like Yellowstone National Park and Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, he spent his time at home traveling to various public lands and nature areas of Northwest Iowa. Jim also served as a local hunter safety instructor for over 25 years and received a Governer’s Volunteer Award for this service.
Jim did not have children of his own, however, he did love and care for many young men that he considered his “kids.”
For those that knew Jim, we were extremely lucky and blessed to have him be a part of our lives. He was a wealth of knowledge, cared deeply for others, and had a good sense of humor. Although Jim didn’t really like praise or recognition, we thank you, from the deepest part of our hearts, for being an all-around great human being. We love you and you will be deeply missed.
