William "Bill" Cook

William “Bill” M. Cook, 78, longtime Iowa City Police Officer, died peacefully Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
Visitation will begin at 10 AM, Monday, November 20, 2023 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, followed by the funeral service with honors by the Iowa City Police Honor Guard at 11 AM. A luncheon will follow at the Kirkwood Room. Graveside committal will be at 2:30 PM, Monday at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mayor’s Youth Empowerment Program.
Bill was born January 9, 1945 to Carl and Helen (Harry) Cook. Bill graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1963. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1980.
On June 5, 1965, Bill married Karla Hughes in Fort Madison. They recently celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Bill joined the Iowa City Police Department in 1965 as a Radio Operator and retired in 1988 as a Sargent. Bill was helpful, caring and always concerned about others. He had a great sense of humor.
After retirement from the police department Bill couldn’t sit still. He went on to work for State Farm Insurance, as a paralegal at the Iowa City Attorney’s office, as a private investigator and operated his own custom framing business. All throughout his years, Bill enjoyed traveling, woodworking and family.
Bill was a member of the Iowa State Police Association, St. Mark’s Methodist Church, Sunrise Optimists, Mercy Board of Directors, and served on the Civil Service Commission.
Bill is survived by his wife, Karla and children, Tim of Pleasant Hill and Brenda (Steve) Hodnett of Newton; grandsons, Michael and Thomas Hodnett; and his brother, Jim (Cam) Cook; nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Frances, Doris, and infant sister, Donna.
