Dick, the son of Leo and Verta (Melton) Hoffman, was born on September 14, 1942, in Centerville. He grew up in Moravia and graduated from Moravia High School in 1960. After graduation, Dick moved to Des Moines and worked as a clerk and then head bookkeeper at Banker’s Trust. After tiring of the big city, he moved back to Moravia to farm. In 1961, Dick was married to Judith Carson. They would move to Newton where Dick would join the Newton Police Department as an officer. In 1971, Dick married Brigitte “Kitty” Callison. During his time with the police department, Dick would also work various odd jobs around Newton. Following his medical retirement as a Sergeant in 1990, Dick drove truck for a couple years and then began a 20-year career as a Gaming Commission Investigator at Meskwaki Casino. In his careers and his life, he was a jack of all trades. There was nothing he couldn’t do and would do it well.
Dick moved to rural Grinnell in the mid 1990’s and enjoyed breeding and raising horses through his company, Diamond RH Quarter and Paint Horses. In his younger years, he was also an avid hunter and enjoyed riding his motorcycle. Dick’s “Heaven on Earth” was the property in Wyoming that he purchased in 1996. He would make as many trips out there as he could but would never miss the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days.
Dick is survived by his children, Tammy (Jeff) Lender of Grinnell, Monte (Melissa) Hoffman of Alaska, Steve (Penny) Hoffman of Marshalltown, and Michele (Graham) Fox of Arizona; grandchildren, John Nichols, Jamie Allspach, Michael Fisher, Jessy Wobschall, Chad Hoffman, C.J. Hoffman, Shane Hoffman, Blane Wilkens, Colton Chisholm, Amanda Mach, Taylor Hoffman, Logan Hoffman, Kori Fox, and Kendra Fox; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by a close friend, Bertha Deaton. Dick is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rhonda Chisholm; and a brother, Kenny Hoffman. The family would like to thank, Katrina Blake for her help with Dick through the years.
