LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
By Paula Feltner and Mike Heller, ISPA Lobbyists
As of this writing, we are smack in the middle of the 87th General Assembly, second legislative session. It is a week of change for two reasons. First, the Senate had to elect new leadership because Senator Bill Dix resigned from the Senate and his position as Senate Majority Leader. He was replaced by Senator Jack Whitver from district 19 (Ankeny). Senator Charles Schneider from district 22 (West Des Moines) will be the new Majority Leader. Amy Sinclair from district 14 (Allerton) will be Majority Whip.
Second, the end of this week is the second "funnel" deadline, which means that many bills will be dead for the session, and the appropriations, ways and means bills take center stage along with bills that escaped the funnel. This session has produced the largest number of bills affecting law enforcement in all the years we have represented the Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) — as of this writing, midterm in the session...

COPLINE: AN OFFICER’S LIFELINE NEEDS YOUR HELP
1-800-COPLINE (1-800-267-5463)
Copline is the first national law enforcement officers’ hotline operated entirely by retired officers. These individuals receive intensive training in active listening and are knowledgeable about psychosocial stressors officers and their families go through both on and off the job. Active and retired officers or their families can call 24/7 and be assured that a trained retired officer is on the other end of the line. Copline is strictly confidential — the officer’s department will not be notified, and the officer won’t face any repercussions for seeking help.
Copline was created with the active and retired officer in mind. Many times, the only person a cop feels safe talking to is another cop. When an officer retires, they take with them the wisdom and experience that only time on the job can provide. Officers enjoy helping others; they like being there for another person and letting them know someone really does care — especially if it is a fellow officer.
