2024 National Police Week NAPO Legislative Day

By Jason Feaker, ISPA 2nd Vice-President
Waterloo Local # 12

The Iowa State Police Association (ISPA) was represented in Washington, D.C., during National Police Week, May 9-18, 2024. President Judy Kellen, Vice President Fred Lepley, along with myself, went to D.C. to honor the fallen officers and lobby for Iowa Law Enforcement.

We arrived in Washington on May 12, and were able to make our way to the Law Enforcement Memorial site to see the Police Unity Tour arrive.  The next day we had the honor of attending the 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil.  We paid special tribute to officers who gave their lives in the performance of their duties. As each of the speakers talked, the prevalent theme was service, sacrifice and how we as a law enforcement family come together in times of need. A total of 286 names were read throughout the ceremony. Unfortunately, Iowa added 1 law enforcement officer’s name to the wall, Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram.

2024 IOWA LEGISLATIVE END OF SESSION REPORT
By Fitzgerald, Smith and Associates, Lobbyists

The 2024 Legislative session came to a close in the early morning hours of April 20th. The Senate was the first Chamber to pass the Sine Die resolution (ending session) at approximately 3:30 AM Saturday morning followed by the House resolution at 4:26 AM officially ending the 90th General Assembly.

This session was certainly a year that will be remembered. The Republican controlled legislature took on many battles on policy and budget priorities. Some of the differences were resolved but many were left on the table at adjournment due to the differences of the caucus positions. This caused angst and, in some cases, outright anger between the two chambers, making it nearly impossible to find compromise on many issues that came before them.   CONTINUE READING

ISPA SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

Our Sponsorship spotlight this newsletter is Zanotti Armor.  Zanotti Armor has been an ISPA Premier Sponsor for several years.

Zanotti Armor handcrafts each of its safes right here in the U.S. We focus on precision with a high level of security, greater durability and top-of-the-line craftsmanship with convenient assembly and portability.

Zanotti Armor is located in Waterloo, Iowa and started in 1988 in Mark Zanotti’s garage. We have come a long way since the beginning; born from the idea that no matter the safe’s destination it can easily be assembled whether it’s upstairs, downstairs, basements, closets, or a narrow doorway.  From our smallest safes to the largest, two people or less can move and install with minimal effort with nothing more than a hammer.

We not only strive to provide a high quality safe but it is also our mission to support our community and local law enforcement. We most recently were able to donate a safe to each Waterloo school to help keep our children safe and in support of our local Police Dept.

We want to take this time to thank you for your continued support throughout the years and look forward to working with law enforcement for many years to come. We would not be where we are today if it was not for your support.  If  you would like more information about our company please call 319-232-9650 or email me at:  Travis@zanottiarmor.com

Thanks,

Travis Heddens

SDPD HONOR ONE STOPS AT IOWA PEACE OFFICER MEMORIAL

In 2014, the San Diego Police Department, in cooperation with the San Diego Police Officers Association (SDPOA) created SDPD Honor One, a memorial vehicle to honor the service and sacrifice of all officers that have died in the line-of-duty serving the people of San Diego. In May 2015, SDPD Honor One made its inaugural journey across the United States to attend the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. On August 2, 2023, San Diego Police Dog "Sir" was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a felony suspect.

This May, SDPD Honor One returned to Washington, DC for Police Week to honor Police Canine "Sir" and all the law enforcement heroes that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Along their way to DC and on their return trip back to San Diego, SDPD Honor One made several stops at State Law Enforcement Memorials.   READ MORE
