PURPLE HEART AWARD NOMINATION
By Becki Sammons, Past President

The Iowa State Police Association Purple Heart Award was developed in 2013 for the purpose of honoring extraordinary Iowa peace officers who have been seriously wounded or killed in the line of duty as a result of a combat incident.

The Purple Heart award is granted to any sworn Iowa peace officer who has been seriously, critically, or fatally injured in the performance of law enforcement duty. In addition, this award may be conferred if an injury was averted by the wearing of body armor. This award will be given in all cases resulting in line of duty death, but will otherwise be limited to those cases involving an attack by an assailant or  the performance of an act of valor.

The 2024 Purple Heart Award will be presented to one recipient at the 92nd  Annual Iowa State Police Association Conference in Sioux City on Tuesday evening October 8th, 2024.

In 2018 the Iowa State Police Association Board of Directors created the ISPA Officer Assistance Program (OAP) to help provide temporary financial aid to our members during their time of need.  Since inception the OAP program has assisted over 40 ISPA members and their families, donating over $55,000 to them.

Unfortunately, in 2023-2024 the OAP saw a record number of requests for assistance.   Thankfully due to the very generous donations by ISPA Locals, ISPA Sponsors and our ISPA Members over the years we had the funds to assist the officers and their families. CONTINUE READING
